In this Singer XL-400 review article, we will look closely at one of the pioneer singer sewing and embroidery machines model. This is where other Futura XL models like the 550 and 580 evolved from. How does it keep up with other sewing and embroidery machine? Let’s go ahead and find out.

Singer XL-400 Review: General Specifications

The Futura XL-400 is 22″ x 9.5″ x 13″ big and weighs 23 lbs. Not too big nor too small. The aesthetic has a white and pastel blue color scheme which is simple but not too boring. You would notice that this machine does not have a screen display but instead red dotted lights to indicate the selected stitch. For embroidery designs, you’d have to view it on your computer.

Singer XL-400 Review: Features & Functions

When it comes to functionality, this machine serves its purpose though it’s not as advanced or fully packed with features as opposed to other sewing and embroidery machines.

General

The XL-400 features the exclusive SwiftSmart™ Threading System with Automatic Needle Threader, a designated motor for bobbin winding so you can wind and sew at the same time. It uses a top-loading bobbin system called Drop & Sew™ Bobbin System that features auto-bobbin thread pick up. 6 StayBright™ LED Lighting is placed in the most strategic position for a shadowless sewing spot. The machine also comes with 2 Built-In Spool Pins and 2 Accessory Trays.

Sewing

When it comes to sewing functions, here’s what you’re getting:

• With extra high presser foot lifting capability, a computerized presser foot sensor that will alert you if you attempt to start sewing and left the presser foot lifted by mistake.

• It has a programmable needle up/ down function, speed control capability and electronic twin needle function. It also has drop feed capability for free motion sewing

• Comes with 30 built-in stitches including automatic buttonholes. Both the stitch length and width can be adjusted. You are also provided with a Singer exclusive buttonhole underplate for the perfect buttonhole without much of an effort.

Embroidery

This machine boasts of a wide working area for embroidery. The largest hoop that comes with it is 10″ x 6″ big and so is the embroidery area. Moreover, due to its multi-hooping capability, you can sew designs as big as 18.5″ x 11″. The XL-400 comes with 125 built-in embroidery designs you can directly choose from. This includes 5 types of fonts and 30 lettering frames like arch, wave or banner for an added effect on your monograms.

This machine can be directly linked to your computer using a USB cable for importing and editing designs. This even comes with Singer’s basic editing software that also features how-to tutorials and a color chart of popular thread brands so you can choose your design colors accurately.

Singer XL-400 Review: Known Issues

The most common user complain about this machine is the frequent thread breakage and/ or thread jamming. This is mostly caused by incorrect/ loose thread tension which for this machine is manually adjusted. Hence, this issue can possibly be caused by user error as much as a factory issue. Software errors have also been a frequent issue on the first batch released but later on addressed on subsequent production.

I personally, would have loved to have an automatic thread trimming function. This comes really handy, especially on embroidery machines. Aside from this, the Futura XL-400 is a good machine for both sewing and embroidering and again, it does serve its purpose.
